To try on a piece of Daniel Gibbings’ jewelry
is to discover a treasure unearthed. His jewelry evokes the richness
and opulence of Byzantine cultures and Medieval worlds and conjures up
the look and feel of an ancient archeological find. Crafted in high karat
gold, platinum and silver, his designs are distinguished by ancient coins,
rare gemstones and thick, hand-wrought chains. Hand engraving and textured
surfaces leave the metal as close as possible to its natural state. He
remains true to his vision of creating luxury items that are everyday
wearable and complement an evening gown as well as a favorite pair of
jeans.
Daniel’s creative process evolves from a variety of influences. His childhood
in the seaside town of Durban, South Africa where he was surrounded by tribal
art and culture, first nurtured his passion for primitive design. After leaving
Africa at age 20, he studied jewelry and explored the metalwork of ancient civilizations
while training at the Jaffa School of Art in Israel. From there he moved to England,
studied at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art and earned a membership into the
City & Guilds of London. Daniel’s extensive travels to places exotic
and off the beaten path are also a constant muse. From India, Burma and Sri Lanka
to Israel, Egypt and Europe to Thailand and Namibia - he feeds his passion for
global art, history and culture as he hunts for unique gems, intaglios, bits
of antiquity and new adventure.
Today, working from his studio, Daniel creates unique designs that infuse
old world and traditional technique with his own aesthetic. His inspired
works continue to earn the attention of his industry and a loyal following
of clients, collectors and celebrities around the world.
